Spalding Golf Club

Description of the project:

Spalding Golf Club is an 18-hole championship golf course that has been a beloved fixture in the local community for over 75 years. Affectionately known as the "Oasis of the Fens," the course is renowned for its lush, green fairways and greens that remain in great condition throughout the year.

How did you first hear about FRA Projects?

We were referred to FRA Projects by a Head Greenkeeper who had previously worked with them on a drainage project at another golf course. They spoke highly of the company's expertise and professionalism, which prompted us to reach out and learn more about their services.

What challenges/problems necessitated the requirement to use FRA Projects?

Our golf course has struggled with drainage issues, despite previous attempts at targeted solutions. We realised that we are located in a complex Fenland setting, with an IDB main watercourse and river surrounding the course, which presented unique challenges that required a whole-course water management approach. 

We also had limited historical data on the course's drainage, combined with ineffective ditches and waterlogged fairways, which made it clear we needed specialised expertise to assess the entire system and develop a tailored water management plan. 

This is why we partnered with FRA Projects - their proven track record in water management plans and golf course drainage made them the ideal partner to help us overcome our drainage challenges and help us achieve year-round playability.

What were you looking for in a solution by FRA Projects?

We required a whole-course approach to fully understand our drainage challenges. This included a survey to map each hole and identify opportunities to manage water more efficiently in certain areas.

Beyond just identifying the issues, we needed to develop a 5-year plan which would allow us to budget appropriately and take a phased approach to continuous course improvements.
